INFORMATION SHEET
HISTORY. The Swim Club was built in 1965 by the builder of Calverton, who subsequently sold the facility to the Club. The Club is a corporation, comprised of the 600 families who own memberships that are equal shares of the corporation.
MANAGEMENT. Affairs of the Club are managed by a Board of Directors elected from and by the Club's members. The Board sets the value of membership, prepares the budget, sets dues, and establishes policy for the running of the Club. Day to day operation during the season is handled by a professional pool management company. For the past 17 seasons, this has been American Pool Service, of Columbia, MD.
FINANCES. The club is in good financial health. We are free of debt, and the pool and facilities are in very good repair. Our annual operating budget is approximately $275,000. A reserve fund of $100,000 protects us in the case of a major breakdown.
FACILITIES. The club's property at 12615 Galway Drive, Silver Spring, covers more than 5 acres of fenced grounds, and has:
> 50-meter Olympic-size swimming pool with a wading "L" and a diving "L"
> Circular wading pool, separated by a fence from the main pool
> Basketball court, horseshoes, and three sand volleyball courts
> Snack Bar and patio deck, picnic areas, and a large brick barbecue grill
> The Pool is open 11-9 daily, 12-9 Sundays and Holidays
ACTIVITIES. The summer is full of activity at the pool--We have 1 adult social event each year, and several family events. There are also pre-teen and teen parties. Swim lessons are available to pool members. The snack bar features light meals, a grill, pizza and assorted snack food.
Volleyball is a big activity, with three adult leagues (women's, men's, and co-ed), several tournaments during the summer, pickup games all the time, and junior programs for young players. Kids start playing at age 10, and can join the adult leagues at 14.
The Swim Team (ages 6-18) rivals the volleyball program in size, and certainly in enthusiasm. We have nearly 150 children in this program, with three levels of competition.
The Dive Team offers youngsters from 6-18 a chance to have top caliber coaching and competition.
GUESTS. Guests may only enter with members who pay guest fees that vary according to the age of the guest and the day of the week. Multiple visit guest passes can be purchased, which offer savings from regular fees.
BECOMING A MEMBER. When you buy a membership, it is usually from an existing member who is leaving the Club. These sales are handled between the buyer and seller. The Membership Committee assists with the purchase as the agent for the selling member.
The purchase of a membership makes you a part owner of the facility, and also makes you responsible for annual dues payments. When you leave the Club, your purchase payment is returned by selling your membership to another family.
Although most membership sales use the services of the Membership Committee, this is not required. Members in good standing (no financial obligation to the club) may advertise their membership for sale on their own. Families seeking a membership are equally free to pursue purchasing one on their own. The Membership Committee needs to be told about the transaction so we know who should get membership passes.
ANNUAL DUES. Dues notices are sent to member families in March each year. Dues are discounted if paid by an announced date close to the end of April. A late fee is added on Opening Day. Dues payment entitles all full-time residents of your household to full use of the Club's facilities and activities, including the right to vote in matters presented to the membership.
COSTS. For the current rates call 301-572-4203 or email us at membership@calvertonswimclub.com.
We hope that you will consider becoming a member of the Swim Club that is the best in this area for size, activity, and quality of operation. If there are still questions, please call the Club (301-572-4203), and a representative of the Membership Committee will contact you.
